My response to the fellow

Awful. Tell the rabbi. He should  tell the man that you are new and studying and trying to learn. It shouldn't have to be but we have cranks like that too. Have the rabbi assign you a nice person to mentor/protect you from the idiots. I guarantee they are not isolated to that synagogue.
